The East Public Boat Launch at Big Bear Lake, also known as the Carol Morrison Public Launch, is just west of the Stanfield Cutoff, which separates the Stanfield Marsh Waterfowl Preserve from the rest of the lake. If you head west from the launch you will pass Juniper Point, Lighthouse Trailer Resort and Marina, the Solar Observatory, and Captain John’s Marina at Grout Bay. There are numerous attractions along the shore as well; many visitors enjoy spending an afternoon exploring the Big Bear Discovery Center and the Forest Service Ranger Station, both of which are conveniently located near the Meadows Edge Picnic Area and Alpine Pedal Path. Pack a lunch and make a day of it!
Some nearby lakes are currently infested with zebra mussels and quagga mussels, both of which are considered invasive species. They originated in the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea and were transported via boats. Since the mussels are originally from Eurasia, they are not part of California’s native ecosystem, and they threaten the species indigenous to this area. In an effort to keep Big Bear Lake free of these invasive interlopers, boaters are asked to clean off their boats before launching and follow all posted restrictions.
The launch’s hours change seasonally, so it is important to plan ahead before heading over with your boat. Beginning in April and lasting through early May, it is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. The hours are primarily the same through October 5, although it stays open for an extra hour on Friday and Saturday evenings. From October 6 until November 30 the launch opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 3 p.m. It is completely shut down December through March.
The many inlets and coves along the shore of Big Bear Lake are excellent for leisurely exploration. Don’t forget to swing by the Big Bear Lake West Shore Beach to get in some sunbathing and swimming after you’re finished boating.
Note: East Public Boat Launch is closed during the winter months, typically from December 1 through March 31. For details and additional information call 909.866.5200.
