Situated within the Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, these three large group campsites are just steps from boat ramps and rentals, hiking trails, a camp store, and day use facilities. Each can accommodate over 100 people. Rather than go by numbers, the sites are named Rio, Baranca and Valle. There are restrooms and showers on site as well as potable water. Advance reservations are required to book all three group sites, so plan ahead. The campsites are an excellent option for adventurers who want to explore all that the San Bernardino National Forest has to offer. Each campsite has a restroom, and some of the sites are ADA accessible.
The San Bernardino National Forest is comprised of the northern Santa Rosa Mountains, the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, the San Jacintos Mountains, and the San Bernardino Mountains. These ranges cover 100 miles of Southern California and comprise a diverse ecosystem. Local fauna includes 440 species, more than two dozen of which are currently endangered or threatened. There are many different species of flora as well, including Joshua trees, various types of pines and firs, and barrel cactuses. Unfortunately, many of the pines are not getting enough water and therefore cannot protect themselves from attacks by beetles, who lay their eggs inside of the trees. The Coulter pine and Ponderosa pine are highly susceptible to these attacks as the beetles lay eggs multiple times each year. Forest fires and droughts also pose a threat to the flora and fauna in the San Bernardino National Forest.
Visitors who want to immerse themselves in the forest should check out Deep Creek Hot Springs, the East Public Boat Launch, and Lake Gregory Regional Park. If Silverwood Lake Group Campgrounds is full, the Mesa Campground is another local option for camping. Popular aquatic activities at Silverwood Lake include swimming, scuba diving, fishing, and windsurfing.
