Governor Patterson Memorial State Recreation Site

Governor Patterson Memorial State Recreation Site features picnic areas, bathrooms, a hiking trail, and a beach that stretches on for miles. Many visitors enjoy whale watching, wading, sunbathing, and fishing. Make sure you are at the beach in the evening so that you don’t miss the spectacular sunset. If you are planning to stay in town for more than one day, you should make sure to check out the Alsea Bay Marina and Robinson Park.  Crabbing is a popular activity at the marina, and you are likely to catch sight of the seals that frequent Waldport’s beaches. You can also stop by the WHS Kayak Shack if you are interested in seeing the town from the water. The guides who work at the Kayak Shack are all entrepreneurship students at Waldport High School. The Beachside State Recreation Site Campground is a good option if you want to camp in town; if you are heading to nearby Yachats, you could also stay at the Tillicum Beach Campground.    

Governor Isaac L. Patterson lived from 1859 to 1929 and held several jobs before landing the position of governor, including co-owner of a grocery store, businessman, farmer, senator, and campaign chairman for Calvin Coolidge. He also served as collector of customs in the Portland for eight years as a result of appointments by President William McKinley and President Theodore Roosevelt. During his term as governor he attempted to reinstate income tax in Oregon in an attempt to reduce property tax. His other political endeavors included giving the state board of control full responsibility for the state penitentiary and ensuring that new highways were built throughout the state. He was passionate about preserving beautiful natural areas and creating new parks. Just before his unexpected death from pneumonia, he instated Oregon’s Park Commission. Two years later, his widow, Mary E. Patterson, sold part of the land that now comprises the Governor Patterson Memorial State Recreation Site.
