Lake Campground is located just off of the Big Pines Highway directly adjacent to Jackson Lake. Of the four campsites located in the corridor between Big Pines and Jackson Lake, along with its sister campground Mountain Oak, Lake Campground is the more serene with the most to offer. It hosts eight campsites, each with a capacity for eight people and two cars. Sites are available by reservation, which are recommended during the high season.

Like Peavine and Apple Tree campgrounds just a few miles away, Lake Campground offers access to snow play in and around Big Pines, provided the campground is still accessible from the winter snows. In the spring, summer, and fall it provides a staging point for access to the Blue Ridge Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail, which offer stunning vistas of the San Gabriel Mountains. True for much of the area, opportunity abounds to see wildlife like bobcat, mountain lions, bears, and Nelson bighorn sheep, though the campground’s proximity to the highway may make such sightings few and far between.

What really distinguishes Lake Campground is nearby Jackson Lake, a beautiful and peaceful lake, one of the few in the San Gabriels. The Jackson Lake Recreation Area offers a quiet and cool place to relax during the summer heat, and the lake is well-stocked with fish.

Lake Campground is just off the Big Pines Highway, and privacy is limited here, especially considering the nearby lodge to the east of the grounds. The campground is not the most secluded or isolated, and it is busy. But its location close to Los Angeles, ease of access, and proximity to Jackson Lake make it a great weekend getaway for a family or the avid fisherman.

Note: Lake Campground is typically open from the beginning of May through the end of September.
