Thunderhead Peak

In addition to Champagne Powder and world-class glade skiing, Steamboat Resort offers a generous uphill travel policy. A skin up Thunderhead Peak before dawn is a terrific way to catch a Yampa Valley sunrise (or an evening skin for sunset). Skinning up Thunderhead Peak is also a very accessible option for backcountry preparation and conditioning, and many locals are frequent climbers in the early morning or late afternoon. 

The suggested route from the Ski Time Square base area follows See Me or Vogue to Jess' Cut-off and then proceeds up Heavenly Daze below the gondola lift line. An alternative route that is longer and less steep follows Right-of-Way to BC Skiway and then connects to either Vagabond or Why Not.

Snow cat grooming operations can be conducted at any of time day, and they are a certainty in early morning hours. Uphill traffic should take care to remain visible and well away from grooming operations.
