Verdi Peak

The Verdi Peak summit stands at 8,431' in elevation, standing as a mostly unnoticed sentry over the western edge of the Truckee Meadows.

Capping the stone peak is an abandoned fire lookout, and while boarded up, visitors can view a 360 degree panorama from the outcropping on which the fire lookout stands. Visitors can see views of Peavine Peak and the Reno metro area to the east, the town of Truckee and Northstar Ski Resort to the south, and Boca and Stampede Reservoirs nestled in the forest to the west. The first lookout atop Verdi Peak was built in the early 1930's, with the current cabin constructed in 1983. 

There are various hiking trails and forest roads that reach the peak, however visitors will find a steep gain in elevation and very rough road at best regardless of how they approach the peak. Visitors should prepare for strong winds and much cooler temperatures at the summit than in the surrounding areas.

There are no amenities of any kind at the peak or along the dirt roads to reach it.

Those planning on driving to the peak should be aware that roads are incredibly rocky and rough, and high clearance and all wheel drive are a minimum. The road up can remain covered in snow and mud late into the season due to its steep shady setting. The two primary dirt roads to reach Verdi Peak are accessible from Boca Spring Campground near the Boca Reservoir, and from Dog Valley Road as it climbs west from the town of Verdi, Nevada. Cell signal is very spotty so visitors should map out their route before leaving.
