Colorado National Monument and the adjoining McInnis Canyons National Recration Area together make a huge wild area just outside the city of Grand Junction, Colorado. There is a wonderfully situated campground in the national monument, but low tunnels (10.5-foot clearance) at either entrance to the monument make it inaccessible to most RVs. An excellent alternative is the the Fruita section of the Colorado State Park, just a few miles from the monument entrance. A 10-minute drive is all it takes to reach the visitor center and some of the most scenic portions of the national monument.
The Fruita Campground, like many of the Colorado state parks, is very well-developed with nicely-paved roads, concrete pads, and both full hookup and electric-only RV sites. There is also a large walk-in tent area with 13 sites and a group camping area, and both are right along one of the small lakes. Fishing, boating (there is a boat ramp), and bird-watching are all popular in this park. The main downside is its location right at the edge of a commercial area of the town of Fruita, so traffic noise and city lights are nearby.
