Sunset Campground is a great option for those looking to overnight in the vicinity of Grant Grove + General Sherman Tree, and the proximity to the amenities of Grant Grove Village make it a very popular choice for families and groups. Showers, groceries, a post office, and various ranger programs are just across the highway, not to mention the excellent King's Canyon Visitor Center. Staying in this section of Kings Canyon also puts you a short drive away from some of the memorable and accessible sights in neighboring Sequoia National Park such as the Giant Forest, General Sherman Tree, and Moro Rock. Several sites offer fantastic views to the west toward Ella Falls, Sequoia Lake, and the Central Valley, making Sunset a great spot to catch a sunset.
Like nearby Azelea Campground, this is a large facility with first-come, first-served sites. Of the 159 total sites, only the two group sites (for groups of 15 to 30 people) are available for reservation. Pines, cedars, and firs keep the sites sheltered and help differentiate the sites from one another. Some sites are still paired quite close together, however, so it pays to either share these clusters with friends and make a de facto group site or arrive early in the day to select one with a little more space. All sites have picnic tables, fire rings, and food storage bins. Potable water spigots and restrooms are distributed throughout the campground. There are no hookups or dump stations in Sunset, and the length of individual sites varies greatly. Generator hours are between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.
Sunset Campground is open from mid-May through the beginning of September. Call 559.565.3341 for specific dates and conditions.
