Kalaoch Beach 1 is one of the less frequented beaches in the area. This beach is accessed from a pullout about a mile north of South Beach.
The trail begins by winding through a grove of Sitka spruce, many of which sport spruce burls, large knobby growths on the trees. Unlike burls on other species of trees, the cause of the burls on Sitka spruce is unknown, but they may be a product of a virus or of windborne elements carried from the ocean spray.
The Spruce Burl Trail emerges onto Beach 1. Cross a wooden bridge over a small stream, and acres of driftwood stretch north and south as far as the eye can see.
While you are on the beach, keep an eye out for bald eagles, which are known to nest in the trees along the shoreline and to fish in the tide pools. The tide pools themselves are host to a variety of marine life, from sea stars to anemones, sea snails, and more.
The beaches of the Kalaloch shore from Ruby Beach down to South Beach are open to leashed pets.
