Wild Plum Campground

Nestled next to Haypress Creek and just 2 miles east of Sierra City, Wild Plum Campground is a popular Forest Service summer campground set at 4,400 feet. With fishing access directly on Haypress Creek and additional opportunities just a short walk away on the more productive North Fork Yuba River, this is a good camp for anglers. The Lakes Basin region of the northern Sierra is a short drive up Highway 49 and the Golden Lake Highway, which makes Wild Plum a great base for exploring the granite and lake-dotted region. The campground also lies within a quarter mile of the Pacific Crest Trail and is a good option for through-hiker layovers restocking on goods in Sierra City.

The campground consists of a smaller, lower loop and a larger upper camp. Approximately half of the sites lie on the banks of Haypress Creek, with some providing stellar views of Sierra Buttes towering above.

There are a handful of nearby waterfalls worthy of exploration. Haypress Falls can be found a short distance from the campground up the Haypress Trail. Lovers Falls, on the North Fork of the Yuba, lies a few miles north along the PCT. Hackman Falls is a bit more secluded and lies in a Hackman’s Ravine on a tributary that feeds the North Fork of the Yuba, a mile south of Sierra City’s core.

Wild Plum Campground is typically open May through October, weather permitting.
