If you are looking for a campsite near Lake Crescent and Fairholme Campground is full, Klawoya Campground is just a bit farther west on Highway 101 and may be a good bet. Set on right into a bend in the Sol Duc River, this campground has an abundant number of sites with riverfront views. While you may not be staring at Lake Crescent's blue depths from you campsite, it will be hard to complain as you listen to the Sol Duc as your evening soundtrack, and the spacious and relatively private sites in Klahowya won't feel like much of a compromise.
Klahowya Campground has 55 single sites and one double site, all of which are first-come, first-served, and none of which have RV hookups. RVs and trailers are welcome, however; most of the sites can accommodate 30-foot vehicles, and a few can accommodate 40-foot vehicles. Aside from the standard configuration of picnic tables and fire rings, Klahowya has potable water, vault toilets, a boat ramp for floating the Sol Duc at lower flows, and a small interpretive path at the south end of the campground.
In addition to its close access to Lake Crescent, Klahowya Campground is a short drive from a number of excellent hikes including the Spruce Railroad/Olympic Discovery Trail that runs along the lake's north shore, the popular Marymere Falls hike, and the rewarding Mount Storm King hike, both of which leave from the Storm King Ranger Station on Barnes Point. You'll also be just a 45 minute drive from Cape Flattery to the west.
Note: Klahowya Campground is open during summer months only. For specific opening dates and more information contact the Olympic National Forest Ranger Station at 360.956.2401.
