Whether you are in the Twin Falls area for a larger adventure or simply looking for a nice break during the drive across Idaho on I-84, the Shoshone Falls overlook and park are worth a visit. At 212 feet, Shoshone Falls are 45 feet taller than the more well-known Niagara Falls, and they span a rim that is 1,000 feet wide. The park is open year round, but the best viewing for these spectacular natural waterfalls is reported to be in the spring when flow is aided by snowmelt. Additionally, water is often diverted for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation in the summer and fall. The falls also serve as an ecological boundary, separating the Upper Snake and Columbia Unglaciated freshwater ecoregions.
The park is owned and operated by the City of Twin Falls. The land was originally donated for this purpose in 1932. The park contains grassy picnic areas, hiking trails, interpretive visitor information, and restroom facilities. The Dierkes Lake Recreation Area is also adjacent to the park.
