Sooes River Kayak/Canoe

Located in the northwesternmost region of the continental United States in the Makah Indian Reservation, the Sooes River is an easy kayaking adventure through very pretty country. The Sooes river is approximately 16 miles long; however, if you are approaching from Makah Bay, only the first 3.3 miles are accessible because of a dam and electrified fence placed by the Makah National Fish Hatchery.

The Makah Indian Reservation is a sovereign nation and has laws that may differ from Washington state. The Makah require a special recreation pass while visiting and enjoying their many parks. The Makah Recreation Pass can be acquired for $10 at the Makah Culture and Research Center near the entrance to Neah Bay as well as a few other places in Neah Bay.

When putting in at the mouth of the Sooes River, try to time your departure with the rising tide, as it will help negate the minor downstream current of the river. Be cautious of logs hidden just under the surface and the occasional shallow section of water. Watch for the abundant jumping salmon and many species of birds along the river.
