This week in Portland is forecasted with temperatures up to 110 degrees and nothing does a better job of cooling you down during a heat wave than a refreshing dip. While there are literally hundreds of awesome swimming holes and beaches within reach of Bridge City, here are ten of our favorite places to cool off within an hour(ish) drive of Portland.
Dougan Falls. Deep pools and cliff jumping opportunities on the Washougal River, 43 miles from Portland.
Collins Beach. Three miles of continuous beach on Sauvie Island, 23 miles from Portland.
The Spit + Hood River Event Site. Open sandy beaches with swimming, paddling, kite and wind surfing on Hood River's waterfront, 63 miles from Portland.
High Rocks, Cross Park. Despite the crowds and the proximity to the freeway, the area's unique rocky banks and the picturesque stretch of water still make it a worthy destination on a hot day.
Knights Bridge Park. Just before its convergence with the Willamette River, the Molalla River slows down into deep pools that are ideal spots to cool off during the hot, mid-summer months.
Molalla River. A gorgeous deep hole, this swimming spot offers jewel tone colors and a sandy entrance into the water only a short drive southeast of PDX.
Clackamas River. We LOVE the Clackamas for everything from floating and boating to quick dips on the hottest of days. Check out The Narrows or Carter Bridge Day Use Area for an amazing retreat on a hot mid-summer day.
Washougal River. If you're looking for rocky outcroppings, small pebbly beaches, and clear, turquois pools of cool mountain water, then this is your place - and don't miss Naked Falls!
Marine Drive Beach. This is a lovely destination for a sunset on the river - but please make sure to pack out your trash and always be mindful of river tides and temperatures at this location.
