Volleyball, hiking trails, and ample day use picnic areas make Huddart Park in Woodside a favorite for families on the peninsula. Resting between I-280 and Highway 35, Huddart’s landscape and foliage varies from grass and chaparral to mixed evergreen and oak. Young redwood forests shelter hikers from the sun on the Santa Cruz Mountains’ warmer eastern slopes.

Gold rush era logging cleared the old-growth redwoods, although the resilient species is slowly repopulating. Black tailed deer, coyotes, raccoons and bobcats call the park home. Mountain lions have been spotted in the area, although sightings are infrequent.

Huddart Park hosts day camps and other events in the well-developed picnic areas. Group reservations can be made online or by contacting San Mateo County Parks Dept.

King’s Mountain Archers offer free classes periodically at the park’s archery range.

Hikes vary in difficulty, and many trails accommodate equestrians. Bikes are only allowed in paved areas. Dogs are not permitted in any part of the park.
