While legally all beach area and docks are to be publically accessible on Ambergris Caye (see below), there are some beaches that are more inviting than others. One of these is the Secret Beach area. Jokingly referred to as the island's worst kept secret, Secret Beach may boast the island's most picturesque waters. The 25-minute golf cart ride from San Pedro Town makes Ambergris' leeward destination feel completely removed from the rest of the tourist scene—that is, until one arrives at the destination.

Upon pulling up, callers attempt to direct you into the parking lots for each of the half-dozen bars sitting along the waterfront. During the island's busy season, the water can look like a frat party, with bars and boats each blasting music, kayaks for rent, submerged tables to let visitors get their drink on in the water, and vendors lining the stony pathways along the water.

But this is all for good reason: The water is an unreal hue of emerald here. Its location means it's less susceptible to the seagrass washing up on eastside beaches, and the sea is shallow, calm, and especially warm here.

Despite its reputation as spring break destination, the beach is family friendly with shorefront games and plenty of kids in the water. It will be a lot quieter during the offseason as well. Secret Beach is worth a visit while on the island, just be ready for the bumpy ride required to get out there.

Ambergris Caye beach rules: In Belize, the rules are such that while private residences and businesses may have beachfront land, the shoreline 60 feet from the water belongs to the government and people of Belize and is to remain publicly accessible along with all docks for public foot use between sunrise and sunset. While erosion is a factor, and some will put up Private and No Trespassing signs, this is the spirit of beach access in Belize. Also, while anyone can access the beaches or docks, this access does not apply to things such as structures, hammocks, or chairs.
