Ivey Lake

Finding good skating lakes is a very seasonal affair in the Coast Range. With heavy snows in the winter, most ice gets covered and requires a lot of maintenance to keep clear. But when a solid cold front moves in and creates a rapid freeze, Ivey Lake makes for a phenomenal place to skate. While it lacks the size and scale of Green Lake, it is secluded and has a more communal feel. Later in the season, if you fancy putting in the work, no doubt the folks living around the edge would be happy for someone to clear the lake off a bit.

The southwestern end of the lake is the best place to start. It is close to road, allowing you to hop on rather than cut through the private property that rings the lake. Once you are on the ice, it’s a beautiful experience. As a fairly shallow lake, the shoreline is beautiful with fish and rocks visible underneath. The highlight is the Mount Currie massif, which looms over the lake and offers expansive views of the mountains, making this a unique experience.
