Lasqueti Island

Lasqueti Island is a beautiful and unique island that sits in the Georgia Strait across from Parksville, in front of Texeda. It is home to a quiet, diverse, and close-knit community that thrives on independence and personal expression. Some have described it as a "utopia," which is a bit hyperbollic, but it is definitely a lovely spot.

Power on the island is limited to personal generators and solar panels. Vehicles are barged over, so their use can be limited. The island isn't keen to promote tourism, but respectful folks looking to explore the shore are certainly welcome. 

There is a passenger ferry that leaves from Parksville's French Creek Marina. For an extra fee they will take kayaks or similar large boats. Inflatible stand-up paddleboards aren't a problem. The ferry drops you off at False Bay on the north end of the island. There is also a water taxi that can take you across. It's much pricier than the ferry, but it's fast, and it can sometimes be hired to take you places like the nearby Jedediah Island. 

Once you're in False Bay, travel can get tricky. There are numerous cars on the island, and there are many taxi services that operate. If you're staying at a bed and breakfast or lodge, your host will have the best and most current information about who to contact. It is also worth hanging out, sampling the locally grown and made cider at the inn, and visiting the wonderful bakery up the road. There are several places for accomodation on the island in addition to the dockside inn. The ocean front places are the best choice for paddlers. Moving boats around the island can be challenging. There is a campground you can book on Jedediah Island Marine Park. It is booked through Backcountry BC.

Activities

There is plenty to do in Lasqueti, though often where you stay is a big factor. Exploring the rocky beaches and spotting marine wildlife are superb ways to spend a day. There are several lovely trails to follow through the island, though they are often sheep trails, so be wary of getting lost because they often go to confusing places. Mount Tremeton is a beautiful area, and the hike to the top is offers beautiful views of the whole strait. On a clear day you can just make out Vancouver in the distance. For those who prefer to stick to the water, paddling opportunities abound for both kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

Lasqueti does have a slower pace of life, poor cell phone reception, and a lovely atmosphere. It's a wonderful time and place to turn things off, pick up a book, or find another way to relax.

The Saturday market is a popular gathering with fresh food and baked goods. The island is full of talented professional and amateur artists. Be sure to bring cash, as credit cards are only occasionally accepted on the island.
