No visit to the Steens Mountain area or the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is complete without a stop in Frenchglen, and no visit to Frenchglen is complete without a stop for dinner or accommodations at the historic Frenchglen Hotel.

Named after the infamous French-Glenn Livestock Company, whose P Ranch headquarters lie just 2 miles to the east, the Frenchglen Hotel was designed in the American foursquare style and erected in 1917. Since 1973 the building has been managed and operated by Oregon State Parks. The hotel has eight rooms available for lodging, and the establishment is proudly anachronistic: there are no public telephones or televisions on site, and the bathrooms are all "down the hall."

Be sure to take advantage of their restaurant for hearty breakfasts, lunches and family-style dinners, for which reservations are required. The lawn is also an excellent spot for a shaded picnic. Note that meals are only served during the following times:

  • Breakfast: 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.
  • Lunch: 11:30 to 2:30 p.m.
  • Dinner: 6:30 p.m.

Note: The Frenchglen Hotel is open from March 15 to November 1. Call 541.493.2825 or email fghotel@yahoo.com to make room or dinner reservations. The gas station in Frenchglen is also open only during the summer months, and the closest gas stations that are open year-round are in Fields and Burns.
