Grand Isle State Park sits on a barrier island in the Gulf Coast near the Mississippi River Delta. Grand Isle is the only inhabited barrier island in the state, and the eccentric destination community has markets and nightlife. The state park offers camping, swimming in warm coastal waters calmed by barrier jetties, and has fishing and hiking opportunities for visitors.
At about a two-hour drive from New Orleans, Grand Isle State Park feels a world away from the city. With its coastal breeze, abundant fishing and birding, and open air environment on a spit of land bound by water on either side, the relatively small park makes for a relaxing destination.
An observation tower and fishing pier stand over the eastern end of the park, and the 2.5-mile Fiddlers Loop Nature Trail circles the perimeter of a pair of ponds where birds gather. Crabbing from a dock is also a popular pastime.
The park offers camping in an area that is walking distance from other park features. The adjacent town of Grand Isle holds numerous events throughout the year, and the park campground can become busy during these times. Entrance fees are $3 per person.
