Theodore Roosevelt National Park, located in the rugged badlands of western North Dakota, offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife. Named after the 26th U.S. president, who cherished the region's beauty and solitude, the park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering scenic drives, hiking trails, and a rich history.

The Big Plateau Loop via the Ekblom Trail begins at the parking lot outside the Peaceful Valley Ranch. Hikers should note that there is no potable water or restroom access at the trailhead, so preparation is essential. The trail starts with a short walk to the Little Missouri River, about 0.3 miles from the trailhead, where hikers may need to assess river conditions for a crossing. Depending on the time of year, crossing the river may vary in difficulty; if it’s impassable, hikers can turn back.

Once across the river, hikers will reach the first trail junction and follow the Big Plateau Trail, ascending approximately 200 feet over 0.3 miles to climb onto the plateau. This section gradually transitions to a gentle incline for about a mile and passes through a sprawling prairie dog town, offering close-up views of these fascinating creatures. At the far end of the plateau, the trail continues with a final stretch of elevation gain, rewarding hikers with stunning views of the surrounding badlands.

At the junction with the Maah Daah Hey Trail, hikers will turn left (south) and follow this trail for 1.3 miles. This section features sweeping vistas of the badlands and a downhill stretch that’s particularly scenic. The trail then reconnects with the Ekblom Trail, leading back toward the river and the trailhead. On this return section, hikers will pass smaller prairie dog towns and may encounter bison roaming the valley. Several small stream crossings and navigating the riverbanks for suitable crossing points add a bit of adventure to the route.

This trail offers a wonderful opportunity to see diverse wildlife and enjoy remarkable views of the badlands, making it a rewarding experience for those who venture out.
