The hike to Wolf Rock via the Superior Hiking Trail is a short but sweet hike but provides sweeping views of Lake Superior and the inland forest. This hike is a one-half mile long out-and-back trek starting at the Castle Danger Trailhead. The Castle Danger Trailhead is located 2.3 miles west of Minnesota Highway 61 on Castle Danger Road (County Road 106). The parking area can only accommodate 8 to 10 vehicles and parking is not allowed on Castle Danger Road. Dogs are allowed on this trail but must be on a leash.

To begin this hike, look for the Superior Hiking Trail sign that says Nestor Grade. It is on the right side of the back of the parking area. This hike is mostly a rocky uphill climb, the trail gains about 150 feet of elevation in a quarter mile. After climbing a few rocky “stairs”, hikers will soon reach Wolf Rock. Here there are beautiful views to the south and west of Lake Superior and a mostly deciduous forest. The views are particularly spectacular in the fall when the leaves are changing. Hikers may want to continue hiking along the ridge for another 0.2 miles or so as there are several more overlooks. Hikers can turn around once the trail turns right away from the ridge.

For visitors to the Two Harbors, Minnesota area the hike to Wolf Rock provides a lot of bang for the buck.
