The Howard Preserve is a 35 acre section of land located alongside the beautiful Big Wood River in Bellevue, Idaho. This protected piece of land within the Big Wood River floodplain has been owned by the Howard family since 1972. It is now part of a conservation easement, which protects the property in perpetuity. The preserve is an important piece of land so close to downtown Bellevue that provides public access to the river, as well as protecting the land and wildlife.

During the winter months you can explore the preserve via an easy one mile snowshoe loop. To access the loop it is best to park on Elm Street then follow the road down and enter the preserve. The trail is well traveled and you’ll likely be fine with just microspikes unless there has been a recent heavy snowfall.

The loop crosses a footbridge then heads through the scenic forest of the Big Wood River floodplain. The trail will make a curve at the far southern end and then come to the river. From here on out you’ll follow the river upstream. There are some stellar views along this stretch, as well as easy river access for fishing.

At the far north end of the loop is an irrigation diversion that forms a small waterfall and is a scenic site. You’ll then follow the trail back toward Elm Street and the end of the loop.
