Strapped on the UD Skimo Adventure Vest, the Gully is nice and compact, so it doesn't get in the way.
Moderate to steep inclines plunging into snow is where the Gully is at its best.
The Gully not getting in the way of quick skin transitions.
The grip rest is very functional.
The chrome alloy steel is not interchangeable. With frequent use, this pick will lose its sharpness faster.
Climbing with the Gully and an old-school Grivel leashed tool.
The Gully on ice. Suprisingly good, if a bit sticky. Hard to tap out and easy to over-drive.
The tip after minimal use already needs a bit of a sharpening.
A better view of the top shaft. It's wide with solid plastic. This grip is much more comfortable compared to solid metal ice axes, particularly when plunging. In my experience this makes a huge difference.
The grip rest ridden halfway up with the lock mechanism open.
For comparison. The Black Diamond Whippet is a solid tool, but its use is specific, and often I find it to be only partially useful. Having a tool to plunge offers a lot more security. When skiing, however, it can be hard to hold an axe and pole.
Lashing the Gully to a pole works really well as a more versatile alternative to the Whippet. It's a bigger grip and still functional.
