Located just east of Vancouver in Burnaby, Deer Lake Park is a go-to among locals. It offers fishing, bird watching, canoeing and kayaking, and plenty of spots for a picnic or to enjoy some time alone. You can access Deer Lake Park Trail from just about any side of the lake, though most people start their journey at the east end parking lot. At this lot you can find washrooms, a playground, many picnic tables, and boat rentals during the summer.
A wooden boardwalk weaves it's way through the wetlands offering an enjoyable walk around a beautiful lake. The wetlands are full of interesting vegetation such as salmonberry plants, labrador tea, dwarf dogwood and many more. Sections of the trail are lined with western red cedar, Sitka spruce, and birch trees. Countless other flowers, birds and species make themselves at home there. It's not uncommon to see people fishing for trout off the shore or by boat, and the lake is stocked during the spring and fall.
The path is well maintained with next to no change in elevation, making it perfect for young families in search of a leisurely stroll. Throughout most the trail you can easily find views of the Burnaby skyline, a must-see during the sunset. Benches, tables and viewpoints can be found periodically along the trail, ensuring there's always somewhere to stop to rest or look around. There are also many small parks and short detours that can easily be explored without much effort.
Whether you're in the mood for exercise, exploration, being social, or finding solitude, Deer Lake is the perfect place for a brief getaway from the busy city life.
