San Juan Island: American Camp

Dating back to 1859, American Camp is part od the San Juan Island National Historical Park that is preserved and maintained by the National Park Service. A visit to the park provides a great perspective into the remarkable history of this area in addition to a selection of trails to walk. A good day trip, American Camp is one of the must-see places on San Juan Island. American Camp was established as part of an agreement between Great Britain and the United States when the San Juan Islands were jointly occupied until a water boundary was established between the two nations. The camp has been preserved in its historic condition, and it can transport you into history of the colonial Pacific Northwest.

Parking is available at the visitor center, and you can walk through the pine trees into an open panoramic view of British Columbia on the horizon across the South Beach. There are good chances to see bald eagles that nest on trees near visitor center. The area offers plenty of easy hikes starting from the visitor center and ending on the edge of the South Beach. You can also catch glimpse of a lighthouse from the edge of South Beach.
