The mighty and scenic Shenandoah River meanders its way through the tall peaks of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The tranquil river provides ample opportunities for fishing, swimming, floating, and boating. The EW Campground at Shenandoah River State Park allows guest to experience life nestled amongst the mountain peaks on the banks of the Shenandoah.
The campground is made up of 32 sites. All sites have electric and water hookups and are meant for tents or RVs up to 60 feet in length. The campsites feature a fire ring with a grill top, picnic table and lantern holder. A single bathhouse with sinks, flushing toilets, and hot showers is located onsite.
The campground also has four camping cabins. These cabins contain two sets of bunk beds, table and chairs, power outlets, and a ceiling fan. The cabins are not heated, and guests must bring their own linens. A minimum of two nights is required to reserve one of these cabins.
Several multi use trails can be accessed directly from the campground, and access to the river is a short walk. The campground takes reservations, but specific sites are not determined until the guest’s arrival. For those arriving after 4:30 p.m., stop at the park’s front gate to collect an envelope with your check in documents. The park store is located inside the visitor center and has some camping supplies and snacks for sale.
Shenandoah River State Park has over 24 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The park has multiple points of river access including a canoe/kayak launch. Several picnic shelters line the river banks, creating the perfect opportunity for a riverside picnic. The park is also home to Virginia Canopy Tours. This is a unique experience where participants can navigate through a ropes course and zip line through the treetops of the park.
Shenandoah River State Park is a good central location for the area’s many activities. Caverns and caves such as Shenandoah Caverns and Luray Caverns make good activities for rainy days. Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive is a short distance away, making for a great day trip. The area is also famous for its many vineyards.
