Christmas Meadows is a magical little spot located deep in the Uinta Mountains on the Mirror Lake Highway. Situated perfectly to maximize the view of Ostler Peak, the campground sits on a small plateau above the meandering Stillwater Fork of the Bear River. The river has several pebble beaches and shallow stretches for children to safely play nearby, and don't forget to bring your pups, because dogs are welcome throughout the Uintas.
Only 11 sites are available at Christmas Meadows, a size that helps keep the crowds to a minimum. Great fishing, wildflower meadows, and wildlife viewing keep everyone entertained. Horseback riding, mountain biking, and ATV riding are all available activities from this location. The trail to Amethyst Lake passes by this campground, but keep in mind it is another 11 miles to the lake from that point.
The campground sits at 8,800 feet, so it gets chilly at night even in summer. Picnic tables and grated fire pits are surrounded by tall pines nearby and large open fields in either direction. The dirt road off of the highway can get a bit rough, but most cars should be able to make the trip when the roads are dry. The Mirror Lake Highway is closed until the snow melts each year, the date of which varies according to snowpack.
