Sunstrip Campground is a small and convenient cluster of eight sites along the Clackamas River in the Mount Hood National Forest. Because it takes less than half an hour to reach the campground from Estacada, the campground often fills up even before the summer season has begun. Sunstrip may have more availability than neighboring campgrounds, however, due to some of the campground's less than ideal features: there isn't much to buffer the sounds of Highway 224, and potable water isn't provided.
Sunstrip Campground offers moderate privacy between sites with the exception of one walk-in site that is surrounded by dense vegetation and very private. Unfortunately, this site does not provide easy or immediate access to the river.
If you are interested in staying nearby at another lower river campground, consider Roaring River, Carter Bridge, Lazy Bend and Armstrong campgrounds. Regardless of where you pitch your tent or park your RV, the area offers ample opportunity for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, rafting, and swimming. For soaking and relaxing, Bagby Hot Springs is another destination that is worth a visit, and it can be reached within an hour by car.
Note: Sunstrip Campground is open from April 19 through October 6. Potable water can be found across the highway 0.5 miles downriver at Roaring River Campground.
