Haystack Reservoir is a body of water located south of Madras with a spectacular view of Mount Jefferson. It is a popular destination for anglers and well stocked with a variety of freshwater fish, including largemouth bass, crappie, rainbow trout, and catfish. The surrounding area consists of high-desert shrubs and juniper, along with a wide variety of waterfowl and other birds.
The Haystack Reservoir Campground is quiet and well maintained, with 24 sites spread across a medium-sized area. The best campsites are the ones lining the bank of the reservoir; they provide direct water access for swimming, fishing, or floating around. Most sites have views of Mount Jefferson towering to the west.
Additionally, the campsite is located in a great location from which to explore. Twenty minutes to the south is the stunning Smith Rock State Park, and the Crooked River offers much to explore. To the north is Warm Springs Reservation, where wild horses wander across the high-desert grasslands.
