One of the many humble campgrounds situated along the banks of the Clackamas River, Carter Bridge Campground is one of the closest to Estacada and the Portland metro area, making it a fairly popular destination. Come early, as this primitive campground is run on a first-come, first-served basis.
Although the campground has few amenities, not much more than a few vault toilets, its relative location to other adventures makes for a fun summer weekend destination. Whether you want to hike along the Clackamas River Trail to see Pup Creek Falls, kayak down the river itself, or cool off in one of the many nearby swimming holes, including the nearby Carter Bridge day-use area, you'll find plenty to keep you busy all weekend.
We stayed at site 7 for two nights and loved it. The camp was pretty filled up by the time we got there Friday night around 7:30pm, so get there early if you can. Site 7 is one of the walk-in sites and it's got an amazing view of the river plus lots of bushes and trees for privacy. There's no running water at the camp to be sure to pack water or plan on hauling your wash water from the river over some gnarly rocks.
