The Pemi Trail parallels the Upper Pemigewasset River for 3.6 miles as it cascades through Franconia Notch. The trail itself is mostly level, but at times it falls into some disrepair due to lack of use. There are several access points that allow hikers to shorten their trip or create loops with other trails in the area. The Pemi Trail hits many of the classic stops in Franconia Notch, including Profile Lake, the Basin, Cascade Brook, and Lafayette Place Campground.
Beginning at Profile Lake, the trail feels secluded in comparison to the more popular hikes in the area. The trail is narrow, winding, and there are often small branches down. Unfortunately, the beauty of the cascading Pemigewassett River is slightly offset by the proximity of the highway. The Pemi Trail meanders along the river's edge for about 1.3 miles before reaching Lafayette Place Campground. Highlights include a great view of the cliffs on the east face of Profile Lake and a beaver meadow.
South of Lafayette Place, the trail continues on the west side of the river. The paved and much more popular Franconia Notch Recreation Path parallels on the east side. The sense of isolation returns, only punctuated by the occasional view of the path on the far side of the river. A handful of cascades can be seen along the way toward the Basin.
At the Basin, the trail becomes quite populated for a brief stint. It then continues along the west side of the river passing by Baby Flume and reaching a deep water crossing. During the spring or after heavy rains, this may be impassable. The trail continues all the way to Whitehouse Bridge, where a connection to Liberty Springs and the Flume Trailhead is available.
