Illipah Reservoir and Campground is a free camping area with minimal developments adjacent to a year-round reservoir that covers about 70 surface acres when at capacity.
At an elevation of just over 6,800 feet, the area can be extremely hot and windy during the warmer months, and the reservoir freezes over and is suitable for ice fishing during the colder months. The reservoir is stocked with rainbow trout and has a population of brown trout.
Campsites each have picnic tables and fire rings, most tables have wind protection, and a few vault toilets serve the campground. There is no running water, and there are no electrical hookups. All sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. A day-use area also sits above the road down to the edge of the reservoir.
One loop serves cars and tent campers, while another larger loop has wide gravel pullouts suitable for large RVs.
Reaching the reservoir requires a 1.5-mile drive down a well-graded gravel road from Highway 50. Overall the campground is sparse and the elements can be intense, but the reservoir makes a good fishing destination and offers boat access for those looking to get on the water.
