This campground's proximity to the Whitney Portal, the beginning of several hikes on Mount Whitney, makes it a perfect spot to spend the night before a big hike. The surrounding peaks and granite walls make it easy to forget the campground is only a 30-minute drive from the town of Lone Pine.
The site is divided into two areas. Beyond the first gate there are the main sites that are variously sized and allow for both reservation and first-come, first-served camping. The three sites beyond the second gate are for larger groups, and these are only available by advance reservation.
Aside from the main Mount Whitney hikes, the campground is near to the Meysan Lakes Trailhead, Lone Pine Lake, excellent rock climbing, and beautiful areas for day use and picnics. The campground is clean and well maintained. Visitors are required to use supplied bear-proof lockers for food and any supplies with a scent, and be sure to use the designated bear-proof trash boxes to keep the area clean.
