Though it is not in Grand Canyon National Park, Ten-X is a terrific base camp for any adventures on the canyon's South Rim because it is located only 4 miles from the park entrance. Among the tall pines here in Kaibab National Forest you'll find a bit less bustle than within the national park, though this campground remains fairly busy throughout the open season from May to October.
A good choice for more than its proximity to the park, however, Ten-X is a pleasant setting with good accommodations. Sites are spacious, and each includes a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Water faucets and toilets are spaced throughout the campground. All sites have parking for two vehicles, and pull-through parking sites can fit three vehicles or one RV up to 35 feet long. There are no hookups, showers, laundry, or dump station facilities.
A paved nature trail begins in the campground and meanders through the forest, providing a nice way to spend time with the family or walking the dog. Pets are allowed but must be on a leash at all times and never left unattended.
Most sites are first-come, first-served and non-reservable, so it's best to arrive early. Some sites can be reserved online at Recreation.gov, but you must book far in advance. If all sites are full, you can try your luck finding a site at Desert View Campground inside the national park. You can also find a spot to stay at-large in the surrounding national forest if you are prepared to camp with no amenities, minimize your impact, and pack out all your own waste.
