If you haven't already heard about Westhaven State Park and Half Moon Bay, you will immediately notice that the park is a hot spot for surfing. After catching a wave or two, wetsuited surfers tote their boards through the parking lot after rinsing off under a heavily used outdoor shower near the restrooms (some have indoor showers).

Following their tracks over the sand dune that separates the parking area from the beach, you’ll see why they come. Consistent and sizable breaks stretch along 1,215 feet of shoreline, providing riding space for dozens of surfers. The breaks are so good, in fact, that Washington's largest surfing competition, the Clean Water Classic, is held here annually for two days during the end of May.

On the sand, adults and kids find their own kind of play, be it kite flying, beach combing, or simply strolling. For an extended walk, visitors can head for the dune above the beach to take advantage of the 1.3-mile paved pathway that leads to Westport Light State Park. The South Jetty is another attraction of the park, popular for both fishing and crabbing. Stay safe as you explore the jetty and the waters of Westhaven State Park. Currents can be unpredictable.

Westhaven State Park + Half Moon Bay are day use only areas, but there are several overnight accommodation options nearby. Consider camping at Twin Harbors or Grayland Beach state parks, both just a few minutes to the south.
