The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve serves as both a photographer's hot spot and a tide pool paradise. The tide pools are among the best in California, and the reserve is one of only 34 coastal locations that have a "Special Biological Significance" due to the abundance of marine life, including sea anemones, sea urchins, starfish, abalone, kelp crab, harbor seals, and various sea birds. The silt stone rock formations reach out like fingers into the ocean and provide a stunning foreground for landscape photographers.

The reserve is a Marine Protected Area, so there are several rules in place to protect the marine life and fines for any violations. Dogs are also not allowed. The reserve opens at 8 A.M. and closes at different times throughout the year. Low tide is the best time to visit the tide pools, so be sure to check local tide tables. If you are looking for a guided tour, call the County Parks reservations line (650.363.4021) to reserve a spot.
