Captain Ahab is one of the most technically challenging mountain bike trails in the Moab area. Although the trail does descend overall, don’t expect it to feel like a downhill trail, especially if you ride the upper section. There are still plenty of steep and challenging climbs, as well as long, flat pedals. However, the sections that do descend are not suitable for beginners, with rock-gardens, technical drops, and some real cliffside exposure.

The trail is accessed by climbing Hymasa. There are two access points, one about halfway, which will lead you onto lower Captain Ahab and cut out much of the climbing. If you continue to the top and do upper Captain Ahab, you are rewarded with some great views over the cliffs to the west, as well as a longer descent. Like most trails in the area, Captain Ahab offers some truly jaw-dropping vistas. Wherever you choose to access it, Captain Ahab is a one-way only trail.

Despite the intermittent, steep climbs, the descents on Captain Ahab can be a riot. They are fast and technical. Advanced riders will have fun finding playful, challenging lines through the trickier sections. Intermediate riders should be able to pick out rideable lines for their skill-level as well.
