Flag Point Fire Lookout

Originally constructed in 1924, Flag Point Lookout stands on a 5,650-foot tree-covered butte in the Badger Creek Wilderness. The 60-foot tower once held the original 6 foot by 6 foot cabin, but this has since been renovated to a roomier 16 feet by 16 feet. The main draw to Flag Point is the fantastic views of the cascade range from the east. Mount Hood sits right out your front door. To the north you can see Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier, and Mount Adams. To the south you can see Mount Jefferson and the Three Sisters. 

In the deep winter months, Flag Point Lookout is about 11 miles from the Billy Bob Sno-Park. It is recommended that you do the trip on skis, snowshoes, or with snowmobiles. The trek by foot can take up to eight hours. Be sure to give yourself enough time to make the journey. During the early winter or late spring, you can often drive closer to the lookout with a four-wheel drive vehicle. The trip featured here was taken in early May, and the last 2 miles of the road were still covered in snow. 

The trek to the lookout is certainly worth the spectacular views. A wood shed and stove are waiting to warm you once you reach the lookout. There is a bed for two people, but the lookout can accommodate up to four people. There is extra room for camping below the lookout should anyone in your group be so inclined. There is one propane light, a propane stove and enough cookware to suit your needs. It may not be a bad idea to bring an extra light source if you wish to play games or read once the sun goes down. 

Other items of note:

• Access to the lookout is not recommended for novice skiers. The route is moderate to difficult depending on the snow conditions. 
• The stairs are quite steep and may not be suitable for small children and pets.
• If you pack it in, pack it out. Take all your garbage with you.
• One vault toilet is located at the base of the lookout.
• There is plenty of firewood, but please restock the wood bin in the stove before your departure. 

The lookout can be reserved for $50 per night, but it often books up well in advance. Plan ahead and make your reservations early.
