It takes a determined traveler to reach the Hart Mountain Hot Springs, but it is well worth the effort. Situated on a high desert plateau in Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge deep in Central Oregon, the Hart Mountain Hot Springs provides scenic and relaxing soaking opportunities. The main pool, surrounded by a rock and concrete structure, is comfortably rustic. Textured rock lines the sides and bottom of the pool. Water bubbles up from a crack in the rocky floor. The water temperature stays between 100 and 105 degrees. The pool is big enough to accommodate about six people, but you probably won't have to share.

Another soaking pool is hidden in plain sight just a short walk from the main pool. This undeveloped hot spring is a few degrees warmer than the main pool and offers unobstructed views of the vast landscape. Look for steam rising from the grass to find it.

The pools stay surprisingly warm, even during the winter, so the hot springs make a great destination any time of year. There are pit toilets and campsites nearby, providing primitive accommodations for the overnight visitor.

Spring and fall are probably the best times to visit the hot springs. Mosquitoes can be thick in the summer. Snowfall makes access limited or impossible during certain parts of the winter. Check local conditions before heading out there.

This is a great place if you can make the trip. Campground right next to hot springs. Lots of wildlife to be seen. It felt like a safari.
