Of the several Forest Service campgrounds around Dillon Reservoir, Pine Cove might be great or awful, depending on one's preferences. On the one hand, it is essentially just a large paved parking lot without hookups. Cars or RVs are lined up next to each other in rows. The spaces are fairly large (for a parking lot) at around 33 feet wide by over 40 feet long. One row backs up to a large grassy beach with the lake shore just about 30 feet away. The opposite row backs up to grass that faces the day use parking lot.
It is not the most beautiful setting, but the location more than makes up for it's humble roots. The view of the lake and mountains from either side of the lot is gorgeous, and the lake access could not be better. There is even a boat ramp right next to the campground.
At the far end of the campground are the four tent walk-in sites, which are excellent. Roomy, private, and also right on the lake, these tent sites are some of the best in the area. Be aware that the walk to some of the sites is a bit long to carry a lot of heavy gear.
Pine Cove is located very close to the town of Frisco and many activities like a mountain bike park, sledding, disc golf, and wagon rides. There is a tremendous number of trails for hiking and biking in the area, and there are also the civilized amenities of Frisco, Breckenridge, and the other local towns. This campground is a great place to hang out by the lake to enjoy the surroundings.
