Not to be confused with Lone Pine Campground in Cottonwood Canyon State Park, Oregon's second largest state park, the John Day River's Lone Pine Recreation Site is located over 100 miles upstream, just northeast of Kimberly, Oregon. Lone Pine's name aptly conjures images of the barren landscape synonymous with the John Day River.

Like Big Bend Recreation Site  just a mile and a half up river, the Bureau of Land Management charges a modest $5 per night to camp at these relatively primitive and very spacious campsites. Keep in mind that Lone Pine's five campsites are managed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Note: Due to the arid landscape, campfires are often banned during the summer months. See the recreation site's bulletin board for postings.
