Originally home to the semi-nomadic Wintu Native Americans, this site was homesteaded by T.B. Fowler in the late 1800s.  In 1887 he built a hotel and cottages for tourists who fished the McCloud River and those who were making their way from the Fall River Valley to Mount Shasta.  Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the hotel in the early 1900s. In 1932 the Forest Service purchased the land and established a modest campground built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.  The site has been a campground ever since.  Today, after a recent $400,000 makeover, the campground is in pristine condition with newly paved roads, well-built grills, anti-bear food boxes, and robust picnic tables.  In total the campground hosts 39 car-camping spots.  Even though many renovations and improvements were recently made, the camp is still without showers.  Sitting just above the McCloud River in a forest of firs, ponderosa pines, redwoods and brush, the campground has terrific access to the McCloud River Three Falls Trail, a moderate hike that will satisfy any waterfall lover.

Note: The campground is generally open May 1-October 31.

Excellent campsite, visited in late Sep. We stayed in site #18 for three nights but all the sites in loop A were spacious and on flat ground. There is a general store in the town of McCloud about 8 miles away for last minute supplies. The lower, middle, and upper McCloud waterfall trails nearby are beautiful and very enjoyable. Takes about 1.5 to 2 hrs to complete at moderate pace. Went on Pather Meadows trail on Mt. Shasta about an hour away. Views of Mt. Shasta are gorgeous but was cold when we visited. Another interesting site we visited was Castle Crags state park about 1/2 hr away. Drove up to the base of the Vista point inside the park ($8 entrance per vehicle) and then took a short trail to get an awesome view of the Crags mountain with its unique granite structures.

Stayed in site #1, lots of shade and space for multiple tents. There was a nice sized tent pad, but we didn't use it as we wanted to little more shade. Compared to Southern Cali campgrounds, this is pretty spacious and you're not right on top of your camping neighbors, we could actually only the neighbors in site #2. And even though the site is close to the entrance, there wasn't any noticeable traffic. All of the sites have bear boxes and thankfully they were not having any bear issues during our visit. Site is reservable on https://www.recreation.gov.

Pros & Cons of Site #1

Pros - large site, can hear the river, close to the trail, water spigot & restrooms.
Cons - close the restrooms and camp host
