This shady and secluded campground is south of Big Bear Lake and in close proximity to many area destinations. It is one single site, but it accommodates up to 40 people, which is perfect for program trips or families traveling together. You must reserve in advance, which means you are guaranteed to have the site it to yourself.
The easy Bluff Mesa Trail starts from near the campsite and leads south to Champion Lodgepole Pine Trail and Bluff Lake Reserve. In addition to this maintained trail, the steep rim of Bear Creek Valley beckons for exploration. Walk just west of the campsite to find a spectacular overlook on a granite outcrop, where you may even meet rock climbers scaling the cliffs.
Even though this is a single-reservation group camp, remember that you are still on public land, so you should treat it responsibly and share the forest with other visitors on the trails and roads. There is no garbage service, and all trash must be packed out. Picnic tables, a grill, fire ring, and vault toilets are available as amenities to campers.
Note: Reservations are required for Bluff Mesa Group Camp, which is typically open from mid-May through mid-October. Call 877.444.6777 for specific seasonal open/close dates. If Bluff Mesa is taken, try Boulder Group Camp or Deer Group Camp.
